Scott M. Matheson Courthouse

The Scott M. Matheson Courthouse project was a monumental endeavor for the State and a landmark for downtown Salt Lake City. At the time of construction, it was the largest public building built since the Utah State Capitol. The Matheson Complex is a massive five-story structure that houses Third District, Third District Juvenile and the Utah Supreme Court, Utah Court of Appeals, and the Utah State Law Library. The layout is a symmetric two-winged structure with a central circular colonnade which runs the full height of the building. The exterior is limestone with a contrasting glass and steel facade. A number of materials, finishes, and installation methods were unique including Nickel Silver to accent the light fixtures and interior elements, the rotunda flooring turned and set in a diamond pattern with traditional/classical treatment of stone, and cherry wood throughout the facility. Located below the facility, Big-D also constructed the three-level, 300,000-sf secure parking garage that accommodates more than 600 vehicles.
